Pre-Season - Winter/Spring of 2017
Before the official training even starts, Aoraki provides a chance for teams to get an early taster.
There are two 'winter' events in 2017.
Polar Blast on Sunday 20-August-17. See Facebook Event.
Cobweb Blaster on Sunday 24-September-17
Don't forget to email your intention of whether OR NOT you will be entering.

Ice Breaker 2017
Most teams start training after Labour weekend (that is, late October) although some teams get onto the water earlier. The first formal race day for the season in the South Island is the "Ice Breaker" (following on from the off-season race days at the end of August and the end of September).
Last year the format included the 250 metre Sprint and the 700 metre Turns Race. There was als a (land based) Tug of War, Women's Grade and Mens Grade.
Lake Rua (off Greywacke Rd, via Sawyers Arms Rd on the north side of Johns Rd, Russley). It is part of the Roto Kohatu lakes (the western half is used for Jet Ski) and it is a good way to start the season, with 250 metre sprints. The racing may also include some form of Turns Racing.
Sunday 10-Dec-2017 (the day after the Kaiapoi Carnival?)

Super 10 Festival 2018
Date: Sunday 18-FEBRUARY-2018 at Akaroa.
Note the "Super 10" is AFTER the Aoraki Open this season. That way we can ensure that Lake Pegasus will be open for the Aoraki Open.
2018 is to be the sixth year of racing Super 12s in Akaroa (although it weas cancelled due weather in 2017) - in 2010 and 2011 we ran it at Lake Pegasus.
Note that following the 2015 racing where we found that boats were running aground in the Le Mans Race, Aoraki reviewed the schedule. Thus the 250 metre will be run FIRST with two Heats (on the incoming tide) and then the Le Mans (while tidal flow is slower) then the 250m Finals (on the outgoing tide). Captain's Briefing is 30 minutes before the First Race.

South Island Champs 2018
Aoraki's main Dragon Boat Regatta.
Date: Saturday 10-Mar-2018
Venue is Lake Hood.
There are thoughts of running the Nationals (when they are in the South Island) at other locations (maybe Ruataniwha, Wanaka or Queenstown) but to do that we need to first prove that we can do the set up, logistics, moving boats to the venue and so on. And that generally means that we trial it at South Island Champs. Therefore there is more work to be done to make that happen.
No known conflicts??
Location: Lake Hood, Ashburton.

NZDBA National Championships 2018
Nationals are in the South Island this season, and will again be a two day event. Specifically, it will be Friday/Saturday racing (not Saturday/Sunday). This allows adults to have a full Prize Giving and After Party on Saturday night, and for teams to take a relatively leisurely return trip to their home town.
It will be slightly earlier in the season this year, ensuring warmer wether and more daylight hours. So book your leave for the weekend of 24th March 2018, and the venue is Lake Hood!
The format is 500m Championships racing [Standard Boat in the morning then Small Boat in the afternoon] on the first day of racing, then 200m Sprint Championships [again, Standard Boat in the morning and then Small Boat] on the second day, and finishing with the 2,000m Turns Race. See Nationals.
At the major South Island events (except Akaroa) Aoraki expects to have "The Naked Baker" van (Mobile EFTPOS is available) providing Coffee and food. This includes:
